The Aggie volleyball team will face the LSU Tigers tonight at Reed Arena. The Southeastern Conference match begins at 7:00 p.m. and will be nationally televised by ESPNU. Tonight is “Fish Camp Night” at Reed, and members of the Aggie Class of ’17 who attend wearing their Fish Camp T-shirt will be admitted free of charge.
Both the Aggies and the Tigers enter the evening with a two-match losing streak they would each love to snap. While the Aggies are 9-5 overall and 1-2 in the SEC, the Tigers are 10-3 overall and 0-1 in the SEC.
Last weekend, the Aggies fell at the third-ranked Florida Gators, 3-0 and then lost at South Carolina, 3-1. This was the Aggies’ first road outing of the season.
The Tigers lost September 27, 3-2, in a match against Georgia, and also lost 3-0 to the Texas Longhorns this past Saturday. Both games were played at LSU.
Last year when the teams met in Baton Rouge, the Aggies emerged victorious, by a score of 3-1, on their way to winning the SEC Western Division. That championship stopped LSU’s run of seven consecutive SEC Western Division titles.
Five Aggie starters enter the match tonight averaging at least 2.50 points per set: Sierra Patrick (3.73 pps); Angela Lowak (3.53 pps); Shelby Sullivan (3.16 pps); Jazzmin Babers (2.71 pps); and Allie Sawatzky (2.50 pps).
Sawatzky, the senior Aggie setter who has started every match of her career (106), posted her fourth triple-double of the season in the team’s loss at South Carolina. She now leads the SEC in triple-doubles.
What to watch for: LSU leads the SEC and is 10th nationally with 2.84 blocks per set. Tiger freshman Briana Holman leads the league, individually, and is No. 2 in the country in blocks, averaging 1.54 per set for the entire season.
Keep an eye out to see how the Aggies do in the second game of the match. Thus far this season, the team is 7-0 when winning the second set. They are also 9-0 when leading opponents in kills and 8-0 when leading in aces.
