ESPN football analyst Kirk Herbstreit recently had the following to say about Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel in an interview with Joe Rose of 560QUAM in Miami:
When he’s on and Texas A&M has the football, you know every single person is going to watch what he’s going to do next. The guy is so much fun to watch…his mannerism and his heart reminds me of a young Brett Favre at Southern Miss. I promise you, when people see him do his personal workout there’s going to be somebody out there that’s going to take him in the first round.
Many agree with Herbstreit’s assessment of Manziel. Johnny is going to surprise a lot of people — not only by continuing to be an excellent quarterback throughout this season, but possibly by becoming the NFL’s Number 1 draft pick next spring. Nobody is backing up to Johnny; he’s making the surge on the basis of his own performances.
But here’s the deal: We Aggies do not want Johnny Football leaving College Station any time soon. He is the greatest player to ever don a uniform at this school, and is one who could have played successfully in any era. Texas A&M and its fans will be sad to see the kid go. As the Aggie program continues to build, the media talk regarding Manziel and the NFL is rather disconcerting.
As much heat as the young man took over the spring and the summer for his run of escapades, some of us stood behind him firmly and faithfully and will continue to do so. I’ve said since the third game of last season that Aggies better enjoy this kid while we can, because in a flash he’ll be gone. Who’s gonna fill his shoes?
