The Number 23 Aggie Women’s Basketball team returns to Reed Arena for the first time since Nov. 13 tonight to host 2013 the Mountain West Champions, San Diego State at 7 p.m.
The Aggies and Aztecs have only met three times, but the most significant matchup came in San Diego during the Second Round of the 1994 NCAA Tournament, as the 13th-seeded Aggies knocked off the 5th-seeded Aztecs 75-72 in overtime. This advanced the Aggies to their first NCAA Tournament Sweet 16, and made them the lowest seed to ever advance to the Sweet 16.
The Maroon-and-White will be playing their fourth game in six days after a playing in the Paradise Jam tournament this past weekend. Courtney Walker averaged 17.0 points per game in the Paradise Jam, and was named to the All-Reef Division Team.
San Diego State is coming off of 1-4 start, but three of its losses have been by four-or-fewer points. The Aztecs come in under first-year head coach Stacie Terry, who is looking to take the Aztecs to their 13th postseason bid, after falling in the Mountain West Tournament a year ago.
This game will also be a time to honor the school president, Dr. R. Bowen Loftin, who will be stepping down from his position in January. He has been a very big part of this school’s history and has always been a self-proclaimed “Student’s President.” The first 1,500 students who attend tonight’s game will receive a bowtie, honoring his signature neckwear.
After tonight’s game, the Aggies host Washington on Saturday, December 7 at 7 p.m. A banner honoring A&M Head Coach Gary Blair’s induction to the Hall of Fame will be raised.
