After a tumultuous off-season for the Texas A&M football team, Trevor Knight stepped in to provide some much needed stability.

A graduate transfer from Oklahoma, Trevor Knight came into the program as Kyler Murray and Kyle Allen were on there way out. Knight led the Aggie offense in 2016.

He threw for 2,432 yards and 19 touchdowns with 7 interceptions. Knight was also third on the team in rushing, carrying the ball 102 times for 614 yards and 10 touchdowns.

After being replaced by Baker Mayfield, it was evident that Knight might not be quite be a Heisman caliber gunslinger. The Aggies didn’t need all-world, they just need a steady hand to get the ball to their play makers.

Knight finished sixth in the SEC in passing yards but dead last among qualified quarterbacks in completion percentage (53.3 percent). Not stellar,  but certainly good enough to get the job done.

During the first half of the Mississippi State game Knight went down with a shoulder injury. He would make the injury worse later in the game and miss the second half as well as the next two games before returning for the season finale against LSU.

Texas A&M went on to lose the the game against Mississippi State and the game after that against Ole Miss. Jake Hubenak played well in relief, but wasn’t the running threat that Knight was. That dimension of the Aggie offense never returned to form after their trip to Starkville.

What’s Next?

There’s no telling what the season would have looked like with a healthy Knight. Injuries piled up on defense too, but the loss of a starting quarterback is hard for any to overcome.

Next: Texas Bowl - Game Grades

The Aggies will turn to Hubenak, redshirt freshman Nick Starkel, or true freshman Kellen Mond next season. Knight will be gone, but his spirit of leadership and teamwork will live on in the A&M quarterback room. His contributions to the team off the field will continue to define the program in his absence. Regardless of the stats, Trevor Knight was exactly what this team needed.
