According to Tom Fornelli of CBS Sports, Texas A&M Football has produced the second most tortured college football fans in the country.

At least somebody else can see it too. My battered Aggie syndrome has perpetually kept me from recognizing just how unfair the ball has bounced for the maroon and white.

The Texas A&M football team has so many more “what-ifs” than success stories. That’s true of their SEC tenure and it’s also true of several decades that proceeded that. Fornelli sums it up well in his piece. He writes:

"I love Texas A&M fans. They’re passionate, they’re crazy, and they’re just the right amount of weird. They’re also tortured on an annual basis by a team that’s never quite as good as it should be. The Aggies haven’t won a national title since 1939 and last won a conference title in 1998 as a member of the Big 12. It was A&M’s only Big 12 title. Life in the SEC started out with a magical run and a Heisman Trophy, and it’s been nothing but disappointment and close calls since."

What if Trevor Knight isn’t injured against Mississippi State this year? A New Year’s Six Bowl was certainly still on the table at that point.

What if the 2012 season opener isn’t reschedule and Johnny Manziel leads the Aggies to victory over Florida. Could A&M have made a championship game appearance? Maybe. As a life long Aggie fan, I sympathize with all of you.

Georgia ranked as his number one most disappointing fan base. The Bulldogs just fired a perpetual 10 win coach because he couldn’t find a way to win the big game. If that’s not continual sports heartbreak, then what is?

Frankly, Texas A&M comes in below Georgia because the Aggies have had less success with nearly as much hopefulness. How many times have you convinced yourself, “this year is the year!” Eventually the Aggies will break through and win a national title… right?
