September 9, College Station, Texas - 6:00 p.m.
This game made Gridiron Now’s list of Most Embarrassing Non-Conference Games of 2017. Why? Possibly because Nicholls State has been outscored 756-188 in their last 16 games against FBS opponents.
The Colonels finished in the middle of the pack in the Southland Conference last year. That’s not quite enough to compete with an SEC team. Georgia nearly found out the hard way what happens when you overlook even a mediocre division one program. The Bulldogs edged Nicholls State 26-24 last year by staving off a fourth quarter rally.
Don’t expect Kevin Sumlin to make the same mistake. He has been criticized for his lack of big wins at home, but he’s yet have an embarrassing loss to a non-Power 5 opponent. Nicholls State is better that they were a decade ago, but they’re not going to be able to channel an Arkansas State-like upset.
Nicholls State returns starting quarterback Chase Fourcade who posted a 9-14 touchdown to interception ratio in 2016. If the Colonels have anything going for them it’s Fourcade’s ability to make plays with his legs. He ran for 9 touchdowns and 459 yards last season. He’s going to have to find another gear if his team is going to still be in the game at halftime.
Texas A&M thumped Lamar a few years ago by a final score of 73-3. Last year they pummeled Prairie View 67-0. This game has the potential to turn into a rout of those proportions. This game won’t be close, but it will give Kevin Sumlin the chance to get a lot of players onto the field. And that’s a win for this early in the season. I wouldn’t be shocked to see three quarterbacks take snaps before the final whistle.
