Mond was a 5-star recruit

In every level of scouting in every sport, the people doing the evaluating often get things wrong. There is a lot to decipher when determining the talent of an individual. This results in players who get overlooked and become superstars (ahem, Johnny Manziel, 3-star recruit), but also in players who are rated highly and fail to live up to expectations (can we pretend Kyle Allen never happened?).

As such, when players arrive on campus, you can usually tell pretty quick if they can play or not, and recruiting stars simply go out the window.

However, it’s still worth noting the difference in Starkel and Mond‘s recruiting standing. Starkel was ranked No. 526 nationally, the No. 21 pro-style quarterback and the 80th best recruit in Texas in his class. Mond was No. 108 nationally, the No. 3 dual-threat quarterback and the 20th best recruit in Texas.

It also speaks to Mond’s talent that he was able to come in and compete for the job as a true freshman while Starkel had to hold him off as a redshirt freshman himself.
