SEC quarterback Power Rankings: Kellen Mond deserves your respect
By Jeff Shull
1. Tua Tagovailoa – Alabama
Jalen Hurts was 27-2 as a starter at Alabama, but that didn’t stop 5-star lefty phenom Tua Tagovailoa from taking the job right away from him.
What he did in the 2018 National Championship is nothing short of incredible. Save for some mop up duty here and there, Tagovailoa had not logged many minutes going into that game. He certainly didn’t have much meaningful playing time. That didn’t stop Nick Saban from inserting the true freshman into the game at halftime.
Georgia led 13-0 at that point, but the freshman went to work, bringing the Crimson Tide back and won the game in overtime with one of the most poised and incredible throws in college football history.
Alabama’s quarterback controversy was a major topic of interest this offseason, and Nick Saban seemingly got more annoyed with questions by the day, but he put all that to bed by naming Tagovailoa the starter. He’s currently leading the futures odds for the Heisman trophy for good reason.
