The Texas A&M Football team had as much security as anybody at the quarterback position over the last four years. After taking over the starting spot his freshman year, Kellen Mond didn’t look back. He would establish himself as one of the best Aggie quarterbacks of all time.

In his four years in College Station, he accumulated nearly 10,000 yards through the air. He would also throw for 71 touchdowns and just 27 interceptions,  increasing his touchdown to interception ratio in each of his seasons with the Aggies.

All of his success as the starting quarterback has translated to something bigger than college football: A chance to be taken in the 2021 NFL Draft. Mond isn’t thought of as one of the top prospects in the draft, but he could be a sneaky first-round talent.

Former Texas A&M Football quarterback Kellen Mond is rising on draft boards

A few weeks ago, Kellen Mond may not have seemed like a headlining prospect in the NFL Draft. But in a year with a record number of teams searching for a starting quarterback, he may have entered the draft at the perfect time.

While he still likely won’t be taken in the first round, there will be a handful of teams fighting over him early on. Jimbo Fisher recently stated that at least ten teams have spoken with Mond about joining their franchise, so the interest is definitely there.

It’s just a matter of what goes down in the NFL Draft. That said, the Aggies’ former quarterback has a high draft-day ceiling and a low draft-day floor. Let’s look into potential scenarios for Kellen Mond in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Former Texas A&M Football player Kellen Mond falls to day three

The possibility that Kellen Mond falls to day three of the 2021 NFL Draft is very real. While he should go earlier, I’m here to tell you how he could fall in the draft.

There are a few knocks against Mond as a prospect and most of them are in relation to the fact that he was never a big-play quarterback. Mond would prefer to make shorter throws as opposed to high-risk, high-reward deep balls.

This comes as a result of the fact that he has never been a strong player when throwing deep balls. He’s not worryingly bad, but teams will often prefer players who can consistently make these types of throws. According to NFL.com, his deep throws are often flat and overthrown, which was true at times.

That said, Mond isn’t going to be making his money by making risky deep passes. At Texas A&M, he was a safe player who could threaten teams with his legs, there’s no sense in changing that.

That said, a lot of teams are looking for players who have more explosive resumes. Because of this, he may drop to day two, landing somewhere in the 4th or 5th rounds. Let’s hope this doesn’t happen, but it’s a possibility.

Texas A&M Football’s Kellen Mond has first-round potential in the NFL Draft

The closer we get to the 2021 NFL Draft, the more it seems like Kellen Mond could be taken in the first round of the draft. I’ll preface this slide by saying that it’s still unlikely, but not out of the realm of possibilities.

As previously mentioned, this year will be a free-for-all at the quarterback position in the NFL Draft. It is entirely likely that the first four picks of the draft could all be QBs, so the second-tier passers will take a step up in most mock drafts.

That said, Mond could be taken anywhere as early as the mid-teens of the first round. It is, however, much more likely that he is taken late in the first round or early in the second.

Here’s a scenario that sees him being taken in the 15-20 range in the first round.

One team that would be an interesting pairing with Mond is the Chicago Bears. As a quarterback, this has to be somewhere at the end of the list of teams that you’d like to land on, but it would give the former Aggies quarterback a chance to see some early playing time. The Bears have the 20th pick as things stand, but could trade up into the teens to ensure that they get their guy — we saw them do this before to get Mitchell Trubisky.

Let’s just hope things turn out a little differently for Mond if this scenario comes true.
