The Texas A&M Football team takes on the New Mexico Lobos today in a matchup that should result in a big win for the Aggies. That said, A&M was also a heavy favorite against Colorado and barely snuck by with a win.

This game should have a more favorite outcome, however, as New Mexico has struggled mightily against top-25 opponents recently. Still, they are a threatening 2-0 team that shouldn’t be overlooked.

Today, I’m going over three New Mexico players to watch and what the Texas A&M Football team can do to keep them in check.

Texas A&M Football Week 2 players to watch: New Mexico S Tavian Combs

Normally, I would have just listed three offensive players from New Mexico’s roster. That said, with a backup quarterback preparing to start in Zach Calzada, the Aggies need to worry a little more than usual about their offensive production.

One player on New Mexico’s roster who could cause some issues is safety Tavian Combs, who has been playing great football thus far in 2021. Combs leads the team in pass deflections with two in two games. He also recorded an interception against Houston Baptist to complement his eight solo tackles.

In just his second year, the sophomore safety has been all over the field for New Mexico. As a freshman, he came second on the team with 51 total tackles. This year, he’s on track to lead his squad with a team-high 17 tackles.

Zach Calzada shouldn’t have too much trouble scoring, but he will have to keep an eye on this player in the secondary.

Texas A&M Football Week 2 players to watch: New Mexico WR Mannie Logan-Greene

New Mexico actually doesn’t have a very threatening wide receiver room at all. I don’t say that for the sole purpose of being disrespectful — their pass-catchers just had a really rough year last season. Still, there is one player worth watching who could cause some issues for the Texas A&M Football team.

That player is Emmanuel “Mannie” Logan-Greene.

Mannie Logan-Greene isn’t the type of player who will torch you for a deep catch too often, though he was on the receiving end of a 58-yarder against New Mexico State. That said, New Mexico State has one of the worst secondaries in the country — compared to Texas A&M, they look like they’re playing with a team of 12-year olds.

The former UCF wide receiver averages just 10.5 yards per catch in his career.

Mannie Logan-Greene’s real value to the New Mexico Lobos will likely come in the form of relatively short chunk passes. He is the Lobos’ number one option, and as a result, he’ll likely be the trickiest player to cover.

Still, when it comes to aerial threats, Texas A&M will have more difficult players on the horizon. The real threat is the player on the next slide.

Texas A&M Football Week 2 players to watch: New Mexico QB Terry Wilson

There is no doubt about it — Terry Wilson is the most threatening player on the New Mexico Football team. The former SEC quarterback knows what needs to happen to win in the SEC, even if he’s no longer in the league.

On the season, Terry Wilson has been completely flawless. The fourth-year passer has completed 73% of his passes for six touchdowns without throwing an interception. He has 555 passing yards to cap off a perfect two-game stretch.

It seems extremely unlikely that he’ll be able to continue this trend against Jimbo Fisher’s squad, but that doesn’t mean he won’t give the Aggies trouble.

Texas A&M’s pass defense has been among the nation’s elite. A&M has allowed the third-fewest passing yards per game in college football and opposing teams haven’t reached the endzone through the air yet. I think that will change this game.

Still, it’s hard to see a world where Wilson lights up a top-ten team’s pride and joy of a passing defense. At the very least, Wilson is an extremely fun player to watch. If the Aggies are winning big, it’ll be nice to see. If it’s a close game, everybody will hate Wilson by the time 60 minutes is up.
