No. 2: New Texas A&M football DC DJ Durkin might not have the opportunity to get up and leave as easily as Mike Elko

This is a really weird twist on a really bad story. Some won’t like that I’m even bringing it up. That said, it’s the truth and something that has to be brought up at some point.

A lot of fans remember the controversy surrounding Durkin as head coach at Maryland involving a player whose death resulted from a toxic environment in team workouts. Durkin was put on administrative leave and eventually returned to his position. Backlash toward the university would result in his eventual firing.

As negative as this sounds, I say this to emphasize the fact that Durkin will not have such an easy time becoming the head coach at another university. If he sees the same success that Mike Elko did under Jimbo Fisher, he may stick around in Aggieland for a longer period of time before taking that next step again.

At the end of the day, Durkin is a great football coach. The situation at Maryland was a learning situation and he’s not likely to repeat this offense.
