Georgia Co-Defensive Glenn Schumann speaks to the media about the start of the season in Athens, Ga., on Tuesday, Aug 8, 2023. /

Could Georgia co-DC Be the Answer for Texas A&M Football?

Another name that has been popping up a lot among Texas A&M football fans is that of current Georgia co-defensive coordinator Glenn Schumann. I have a suspicion that this is less due to Schumann’s actual perceived acumen as a candidate and has more to do with the success of his predecessor in this role, Dan Lanning, up at Oregon. That, and the fact that a few weeks back a bunch of Aggie fans freaked out over the fact that Evan Stewart liked a tweet about whether Schumann would be a good fit in Aggieland.

That said, Schumann is a name that hasn’t just popped up among Aggie fans. He is considered an up and comer in the profession without a doubt, and has a decent resume under his belt when it comes to recruiting. 247Sports lists him as the lead recruiter for 2024 5-star Justin Williams, former top overall pick Travon Walker and first round picks Nolan Smith, among others. His record would certainly seem to commend him as a recruiter, but as a head coach and top recruiter, it’s just an unknown. You have to feel good about the potential here, but there are still others that have actually proven it—which Schumann has yet to have the opportunity to do.

On that same note, you have to wonder how much the success of Schumann’s unit has to do with being under one of the best DCs of the past 20 years as a head coach. He is also admittedly only the co-defensive coordinator, along with Will Muschamp, who has coordinated some fine units of his own in the past. Schumann’s background is with linebackers, just like the current Aggie DC, and in this current era of college football I’d rather have a guy who coordinates a defense back-to-front like Elko or Smart—in other words, someone with a background with defensive backs—if he were to make the defense his baby. All in all, there are definitely several intriguing things to commend Schumann as a riser in the profession, but there’s also still many unknowns, as you’d expect when hiring someone from a coordinator position. If you are to do so, however, Schumann would probably be the best bet.
