Despite some early pitching struggles, Texas A&M Baseball cruised past the Islanders of Texas A&M Corpus Christi, 5-2, on Tuesday night.

After a 2-2 week that featured losses to UT Arlington and Tennessee, the Aggies needed a quick bounce back. They certainly got one vs. Texas A&M Corpus Christi on Tuesday night. They fell behind early after a rough first inning for Turner Larkins, but were able to rally back pretty quickly to find themselves victorious once again at Blue Bell Park.

Pitching

The Aggies used three pitchers on Tuesday night to secure the victory against Texas A&M CC. Turner Larkins got the start, going 4 innings. He struggled at times, giving up five hits and walking three. He was also responsible for both runs scored by the Islanders, one in the first and one in the fourth. Overall though, he settled in well and with the help of a strong showing by the Aggie defense was able to keep the Aggies in the game.

Junior Kaylor Chafin was the first out of the bullpen. Chafin has been a strong performer for the Aggies all around this season, whether that be as a closer or a middle reliever. He earned the win in this one, pitching three innings of shutout ball where he allowed 2 hits and 1 walk.

Junior Cason Sherrod earned the save on Tuesday night, allowing one hit and one walk over two innings of work. This was Sherrod’s second save of the season.

As mentioned earlier, the Aggie defense was a huge help on Tuesday night. Their night was highlighted by a pair of double plays that got the Aggies out of what could of have become some problem innings very quickly. Those plays, along with a few others, were instrumental to the success on Tuesday night. Gold stars for seniors Austin Homan and Joel Davis for these gems.

The Aggie Bats

Let’s talk offensive stars on Tuesday night. My list consists of two, senior Nick Choruby and sophomore Cole Bedford.

With two outs in the second, senior Nick Choruby drove in Austin Homan and Blake Kopetsky with a double down the right field line. This hit put the Aggies up by two after Cole Bedford had scored on a wild pitch earlier in the inning.

Speaking of Cole Bedford, the young Aggie catcher had another strong showing at the plate. He went 2-for-3 on the night with an RBI and two runs scored. He tied the game by scoring on a wild pitch in the sixth and extended the Aggie lead to 4-2 in the 5th by scoring on an RBI single by freshman Jorge Gutierrez.

Senior Joel Davis gets another gold star in my book in the 7th inning where he scored from first on Cole Bedford’s second hit of the night, an RBI double down the left field line. He absolutely booked it from first with no interest at stopping anywhere but home plate. On top of two double plays? Way to be Joel!
