X Factor: The Passing Game of Trevor Knight

In case you haven’t heard, Trevor Knight has already beaten Alabama. At the helm of the Oklahoma Sooner offense in the 2014 Sugar Bowl, Knight threw for 348 yards and four touchdown passes. Knight would get benched in favor of Texas Tech transfer Baker Mayfield before coming to A&M as a graduate transfer. That game has no bearing on this one. Uh huh, sure.

It’s going to take a near perfect afternoon from the veteran quarterback to beat Alabama in Tuscaloosa on Saturday, and Knight hasn’t played that game yet in 2016. In six starts, Knight has yet to eclipse a 58 percent completion percentage and holds a touchdown (passing) to interception ratio of just 9:5.

It hasn’t been uncommon for Knight to struggle out of the gate. As recently as his last start against Tennessee he threw an off balance pass on the second play of the game which resulted in an interception. Regardless of how well the rest of the team plays on Saturday, if “bad Trevor” shows up this team is sunk.

On the other hand, “Good Trevor” has been electric. In two overtimes in 2016, Knight is 3 for 3 passing for 41 yards and has 6 carries for 12 yards and 2 touchdowns. When the Aggies are trailing this year, Knight has a 63.6 completion percentage and had not thrown an interception, while rushing for three scores himself.

Texas A&M needs a near-perfect game from him this weekend, but make no mistakes, he’s certainly capable of delivering in the clutch.
