Texas A&M Football: Could Trevor Knight Play a Different Position in the NFL?

Could Trevor Knight, the former quarterback for the Texas A&M football team, find himself at a different position in the NFL? It’s a real possibility.

The average fan that watched Trevor Knight play quarterback in college can tell you that he wasn’t the most accurate passer. Knight’s 2016 completion percentage (51.9) was dead last in the SEC, and the SEC wasn’t highly regarded for their level of quarterback play.

However, it was never Knight’s arm that made him invaluable to Texas A&M last season. Instead he set himself apart with his leadership and athleticism.

Run Trevor, Run

Knight carried the ball 102 times for 614 yards and 10 touchdowns in 2016. Texas A&M’s zone read attack with Knight and freshman running back Trayveon Williams was one of the most dynamic offensive threats in the country.

In their first game of the season against UCLA it was Knight that kept the rock. He raced over the left guard to score the game winning touchdown on fourth down in overtime. Knight’s wheels took a close game against Arkansas and put it out of reach with a pair of long touchdown runs.

What he lacks as a passing threat, he makes up for with his agility and quickness. His NFL Combine results made that crystal clear. He was the fastest quarterback in the 40 yard dash and finished second in the 20 yard shuttle. Realistically though, mobile quarterbacks don’t last long in the NFL unless they have the arm to go with the legs.

Intangibles

So why take a shot on this guy? For starters, he’s a pure-athlete that can find a way to make an impact on an NFL roster. His football intelligence and decision making abilities with the football are well documented. But beyond the field, Trevor Knight is someone that you want on your team.

In an interview with TexAgs radio in March, Knight shared his thoughts on a potential position switch:

"Right now, I’m confident that I can play quarterback at the next level…. I’m not even thinking about another position right now…. If that time comes, yeah I’d be open to it."

After a tumultuous offseason, Knight stepped into College Station as a stranger. He leaves the small town as a sort of folk hero. Knight’s engaging personality, commitment to service, and encouraging outlook soaked into the Texas A&M culture. This is a guy that NFL general managers will want on their team. Trevor Knight is a great “locker room guy”, irrespective of position.

However, There aren’t extra slots on NFL rosters for “good locker room guys”.  Still, there will be some place out there that is willing to take a chance on the talent because they’ve seen the kind of man he is. Quarterback or otherwise, good luck to you Trevor Knight.
