Texas A&M Baseball: Six Aggies Among SEC Players on MLB Opening Day Rosters
Alex Wilson, Detroit
A 10th round selection of the Chicago Cubs in 2008, Wilson chose not to sign. Instead he transferred to Texas A&M from Winthrop. He spent just one year at Texas A&M and finished with a 6-6 record with 8 starts and 2 saves. While he never found a true role at A&M, he did post an eye popping 120 strikeouts in just under 90 innings pitched.
In the 2009 MLB draft Wilson was selected in the second round by the Boston Red Sox. It took him four years in the Boston system, but he made his debut with the Sox on April 11, 2013 and pitched in Boston for two years. In 44 appearances with the Red Sox, Wilson held a 3.38 ERA with a 1.304 WHIP. His numbers were respectable, but he split time between AAA and Boston, never settling in with the club for the duration of a season.
Wilson was shipped to the Detroit Tigers in the 2014 traded that netted Boston Rick Porcello. Since changing uniforms Wilson’s numbers have continued to improve. His career ERA with the Tigers sits at 2.68 and his WHIP fell to 1.129.
After hovering around replacement level in his first two years in the majors, Wilson has proven himself to be a reliable reliever with a 3.4 WAR since 2015.
