Texas Southern Lady Tigers

The Lady Tigers from Texas Southern will be the Aggies first opponent of the NCAA Tournament. They recently won the SWAC tournament over Alabama State, their third title in four years and finished the season 25-19, ranked No. 280 in the RPI.

They weren’t overall dominant throughout the season. The Lady Tigers were 11-13 on the road, 8-6 at home and 6-0 in neutral sites. At 12-6 in conference play, they were definitely doing enough right to land themselves a spot in this years tournament.

They have played Texas already this season, falling 5-0 in Austin on April 19th. However, the other two opponents are unfamiliar to the Tigers.

Getting to Know the Team

Texas Southern had four players named to the All-SWAC First Team and is home to the reigning Pitcher of the Year and Freshman of the Year.

Junior Jasmin Fulmore was named the SWAC’s Pitcher of the Year along with All-SWAC First Team honors, while third baseman Madilynn Marek was named the league’s Freshman of the Year. In addition of Fulmore, Lauren Rodriguez (pitcher), Kelsey Riley (outfielder), and Chanler Powell (designated player) were named to the conference first team.

Fulmore will be one to watch as the weekend progresses. She posted a 9-3 overall record with a 1.80 ERA, striking out 76 hitters in 81.2 innings of work.

Lauren Rodriguez deserves a lot of credit as well. While Fulmore edged her out for Pitcher of the Year honors, she was dominant in her own right. Rodriguez led the SWAC with 84 strikeouts and led all SWAC starting pitchers with a 1.64 ERA. She finished with a record of 8-4, holding opposing batters to a .214 batting average.

On the offensive side, Freshman of the Year Madilynn Marek’s bat, along with that of Kelsey Riley and Chanler Powell will be the focus of Friday’s matchup.
