Texas A&M Super Regional Preview and players to watch
Months of Texas A&M baseball have led to this: the Aggies will host the Davidson Wildcats with a trip to the College World Series on the line.
“Davidson pulled off an upset for the ages and pulls off a major upset against North Carolina to move on to the next round!”
You may have read this headline thinking this was a March Madness headline of Steph Curry draining ten threes to upset blueblood Carolina, but this is baseball headline. The Davidson Wildcats stunned the UNC Tarheels by defeating the nation’s second best team twice at home in the Chapel Hill Regional. This was a Wildcats team that had not had a single win against a Top 50 school all year long. After doing extensive research on the Wildcats, I fortunately found that there are no batters or pitchers named Curry on the Davidson roster.
The Aggies capitalized on having a regional 90 minutes away from College Station in Houston. They defeated the Baylor Bears and the Iowa Hawkeyes to advance to the regional final against the host Houston Cougars. The final game was not without its stressful moments as A&M had a 4-0 lead entering the top of the ninth before giving up three runs due to a home run, a single, a hit by pitch, another single, and a sacrifice fly.
In the last at bat of the game Connor Wong hit a home run that could have been a walkoff win for the Cougars but it was foul and he ultimately struck out to end Houston’s season. The win gave Texas A&M its third straight super regional appearance, with the last two being at Olsen Field.
