2. Homer Norton (1934-1947)

Record: 82-53-9

After graduating from Birmingham Southern College in 1916, Homer Norton played four years of professional baseball before accepting a coaching position at Centenary College in 1920. After four years as an assistant, Norton took over the program in 1926 and went 60-19-9 before moving to Texas A&M in 1934.

Homer Norton owns the most recent National Championship at Texas A&M. His 1939 Texas A&M team went a perfect 11-0 and defeated Tulane on January 1,1940 in the Sugar Bowl (Tulane’s home stadium) to win the title. That team was led by Aggie legend John Kimbrough.

Norton’s 82 career victories at Texas A&M is second all time. In 1940 his team fell to Texas in the final game of the season, keeping them from an invitation to the Rose Bowl and their second consecutive undefeated season.

He also served as the Athletic Director for the Aggies. In addition to that, he filled in as the baseball coach in 1943 and 1944, leading the Aggies to a Southwest Conference championship on the diamond in his first season. He also won three conference championships with the football team (1939, 1940, and 1941). Norton was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1971.
