The Aggies’ most dominant athletic program is the Texas A&M track and field teams, and it’s not even close. They continue to bring home championships.

The Track and Field team at Texas A&M does not draw an audience like the other big three sports but it should because the program is simply amazing. The Track and Field team has been dominant going back to the Big 12 days thanks in large part to coach Pat Henry. The team brought in coach Henry just before the 2005 season.

Before Henry was hired at Texas A&M, the track program was nonexistent. Texas A&M hired Henry away from LSU where he dominated not only the SEC but the Nation winning 27 National titles in his 17 years there. Henry arrived at Texas A&M looking to duplicate exactly what he had done at LSU: build a championship caliber Track and Field program.

It did not take the Aggie Track team long to find their rhythm once at Henry arrived. As a matter of fact, by 2007, only his third season, the Aggie Women’s Track team had won both the indoor and outdoor Big 12 Conference titles. The Aggies would continue to dominate the Big 12 Conference but this time it was not only the women it was also the men. Both the Aggie Women and Men track teams went on to capture 3 straight NCAA titles in the Track and Field Outdoor Championships, 2009-2011.

How Did the Aggies Handle the Move to the SEC?

The Aggies haven’t had the same success in the SEC Championships as they did in the Big 12, but they have still been doing just as well in the national tournaments. The Aggie Track team has won three SEC Championships and all of them have been in the outdoor season.

However in 2017, the Aggie men went on to win the NCAA Indoor Championship edging out the Florida Gators by literal second. The Aggies and Gators would flip-flop in the NCAA Outdoor Championship with Florida winning and the Aggies finishing as the runner-up. Even though the Aggies finished second in the NCAA Outdoor Championship they finished the season ranked No. 1 in the nation.

The Aggie Track and Field team has been dominant since they hired Pat Henry away from LSU. The teams have won more Big 12 and SEC Conference Titles as well as more National titles than any other Aggie sport in recent history. With the track team always being able to compete for a National Title this makes them the most dominant team at Texas A&M University right now.
