2. Kellen Mond is going to be a superb quarterback

When he’s not running for his life, Mond showed today that he has the poise and the arm strength to deliver the football well. Even with his struggles against UCLA and Nicholls State, Mond never had an issue with short-arming his passes. When he missed earlier in the season he overthrew his targets significantly. A few tweaks and better timing with is receivers in practice produced plays like this:

It wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows. Mond forced a pass into coverage in the first quarter for the first interception of his young career. He didn’t waste much time wallowing though. He delivered a 24-yard touchdown strike to Jhamon Ausbon the next time he touched the football.

There were very few bright spots for the Aggies on Saturday afternoon. The connection between Ausbon and Mond was one of the most encouraging takeaways from the game. That duo played their final high school season together at IMG Academy in Florida. Both guys will be a big part of the Texas A&M offense for years to come. Against ULL they connected for 69 yards on four catches with a touchdowns. Altogether, Mond completed 21 of 34 passes for 301 yards, three touchdowns and one interception.

Mond’s rushing ability , especially when combined with a respectable passing attack, proved extremely effective. Sumlin has had plenty of success with mobile passers at Texas A&M (Johnny Manziel, Trevor Knight), so keeping Mond’s legs involved in the gameplan going forward is a must.
