Texas A&M Football: Kevin Sumlin has a quarterback problem
By Robert Ford
Manziel would end up winning the job in 2012 over Jameill Showers, Matt Joeckel and incoming recruit Matt Davis. Due to the success and the reigning Heisman Trophy winner, Showers decided it was time to move on. Can you blame him, at the time he was on pace to graduate in June of 2013. Ask yourself the question, do you wait and see if Manziel goes pro or transfer knowing you will still have two years of eligibility left.
To me, there’s no blame to go around, Showers was simply at the school at the wrong time. I give him all the credit in the world for taking care of his business in the classroom that allowed him to make a very simple choice.
Showers would transfer to UTEP and start in 20 games, his first season with the Miners was cut short missing the last five games due to injury.
Can you blame Matt Davis for wanting to play at Texas A&M? He was the recruiting class leader, everyone remembers his tweets about “Agg Swagg”, but coming to Aggieland would be an uphill battle for Davis with three other scholarship with multiple years of eligibility left.
This is where I have the problem. You always hear players make their biggest jump from year one to year two. What’s the rush, you have to think Manziel is going pro being draft eligible after the 2013 season. There was a full season, another spring and fall camp for him to beat the other guys out and win the job. Perhaps the hype coming out of high school just hype.
I’ve never asked but at some point I will, was Davis really on Coach Kevin Sumlin’s radar or did he do the right thing and honor the commitment. Ultimately, this transfer hurts from a depth perspective as the 2013 season approaches. Davis would transfer to SMU and play during the 2014 and 2015 seasons. His 2016 season was cut short due to injury.
