Leon O’Neal was one of the biggest commitments in the 2018 class. The 4-star safety from Cypress, Texas was the highest rated recruit when he pledged his services to Texas A&M during the summer.
O’Neal chose to step away from his commitment when Kevin Sumlin was let go and Jimbo Fisher was hired in his place. Florida State was one of the few schools that had not offered the talented defensive back.
Following his decommitment, O’Neal named a new top four: Georgia, Clemson, Oklahoma and Texas A&M. Those three other teams will play in the College Football Playoff this postseason, but the Aggies aren’t out of it yet. Like Brown, O’Neal seems to be in the wait-and-see mode. Once Texas A&M gets their defensive staff put together O’Neal will get the chance to put faces to a program he’s grown attached to over the past several months.
O’Neal’s close relationships with several members of the current 2018 class make the Aggies still seem like the front-runners in this race. They’ll have to be patient, but assuming they don’t dawdle too long it’s likely O’Neal is donning maroon and white next season.
