No. 3 – 1990 Holiday Bowl

What a game this was? I was on the sideline for this one as a coaches kid. BYU came to San Diego with the reigning Heisman winner, Ty Detmer, and a top 15 ranking. A&M had suffered a heartbreaking loss to Texas just a few weeks before.

The question would be, could the “Wrecking Crew” defense slow down the Cougar offense. After 60 minutes the answer to that question was a resounding — yes. Detmer would only throw for 120 yards before being knocked out of the game in the third quarter. BYU would only gain 185 yards in the game.

For the Aggies, they would gain 679 yards and have the ball for 38 minutes. Quarterback Bucky Richardson would throw for 203 yards and one touchdown, rush for 129 yards and two touchdowns and catch a touchdown pass from running back Darren Lewis.

A&M would lead 37-7 at halftime and ultimately win 65-14. BYU would have more return (207) and penalty (204) yards than total offense (185).

The Aggies would finish 9-3-1 and ranked No. 15 in the final AP and No. 13 in the final coaches polls.
