Texas A&M football made national news once again, hiring defensive coordinator Mike Elko from Notre Dame. Twitter reacted to the news with shock and awe.

BREAKING: Texas A&M hires Notre Dame’s Mike Elko as new defensive coordinator

Texas A&M has a new defensive coordinator, and it’s not Dave Aranda. The Aggies were riding high when they thought they were going to be able to steal away LSU’s current DC. Then they had a minor melt down overnight as the administration secretly ironed out the final details to bring Notre Dame defensive coordinator Mike Elko to Aggieland.

Elko’s hiring did not go unnoticed – and for good reason. Elko turned the Wake Forest defense into a fearsome unit before making a significant impact in one season at Notre Dame. He’s highly regarded in coaching circles and there hasn’t really been anyone of note that’s had a negative thing to say about him.

From national college football analysts to your average fan, everyone had an opinion on Elko. Aggies were thrilled, the Irish were ticked as people everywhere took note of the huge hire. Here’s what Twitter had to say about Mike Elko’s change of employment:

The rest of the Texas A&M defensive staff figures to follow in place soon. Current Notre Dame linebackers coach Clark Lea has been rumored to be in the mix to follow Elko to College Station. Defensive line coach Terry Price figures to be in the mix as a possible retention candidate. Other than those two the rest of the defensive staff remains to be seen. However, with National Signing Day around the corner expect Fisher to move quickly to finalize his staff.
