Kellen Mond might not be the favorite to win Texas A&M football‘s starting quarterback job, but there are plenty of reasons he could win it.

Jimbo Fisher has been killing it on the recruiting trail for Texas A&M football and their 2019 class, but there is a big decision looming for the Aggies’ new head coach that will have an impact on the 2018 season.

Nick Starkel and Kellen Mond are battling it out for the starting quarterback position and Fisher has yet to even hint that one is a leading candidate.

This could make or break A&M’s season. If for whatever reason (other than injury) Fisher has to go to the backup and that guy turns out to be better, it will likely mean the guy he picked was underperforming. If you have two starting quarterbacks, you really have none, like the old saying goes.

Fisher absolutely needs to find the right guy for the job from several standpoints. He has to pick the best leader, the guy who understands the offense best, and the one who will have short term memory loss when he makes mistakes.

There’s a good chance the guy he picks isn’t the best at all three of these qualities, otherwise that guy would have been named the starter already. But one of them will stand out above the other.

Starkel seems like the right man for the job: He fits the type of quarterback Fisher has started in the past; he earned the starting job over Mond last season; and he finished the season strong in the bowl game and in the Spring Game.

But that’s not to take away from Mond’s talent. Here are five reasons he could win the starting job from Starkel.
