Texas A&M football: 3 keys to victory over Northwestern State
By Jeff Shull
Run up the score early
The worst thing a heavily favored team can do in a game like this is let the big underdog hang around longer than they should. The 2017 team did this with both Louisiana Lafayette and Nicholls.
A&M trailed the Ragin’ Cajuns 21-14 at halftime before waking up in the second half to win 45-21. They weren’t so dominant in the second half against Nicholls, which is in the Southland Conference like Northwestern State. Nicholls rallied to tie the game 14-14 in the fourth quarter in a game the Texas A&M offense really struggled.
Luckily the Aggies got it together with Jake Hubenak taking over at quarterback and leading two scoring drives behind Kendall Bussey‘s running.
While they ended up winning both, it was a sign of things to come in conference play. A&M has to blow NSU out of the water early to get the younger players some reps and show the rest of the conference they aren’t messing around this season.
This would signify the culture change at A&M. Elite teams are supposed to blowout the cupcakes, not let them hang around. It’s time to send a message.
