SEC quarterback Power Rankings: Kellen Mond deserves your respect
By Jeff Shull
7. Kyle Shurmur – Vanderbilt
The son of New York Giants head coach Pat Shurmur is a staple in the SEC at this point. He has been the Vanderbilt starter for 30 straight games and gives them a chance to pull off an upset each week they take the field. If he had the talent level of an Alabama or Georgia, he might win a national title and be a top draft pick.
Shurmur threw for 2,823 yards and set a school record with 26 touchdowns in 2017. They are coming off comfortable wins against Middle Tennessee State and Nevada, but face a major test when they travel to South Bend and take on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish this weekend.
Vanderbilt needs Shurmur to play well to have any chance of an upset. He is definitely capable. They will go through the typical gauntlet of the SEC schedule but Notre Dame is a chance for Shurmur to make a statement to NFL scouts.
He was the No. 13 pro-style quarterback coming out of the 2014 class, so the potential for the NFL is definitely there, especially being a coach’s son.
