Texas A&M football: 4 takeaways from resilient win over South Carolina
By Jeff Shull
They made enough plays to win
There is a lot to work on moving forward, but the key takeaway from this and the previous two wins is the Aggies continue to make winning plays late in games.
The red zone offense is concerning. They should have put the game away by the third quarter with how well the defense was playing. South Carolina put up 37 points against Missouri last week and the Wrecking Crew held them without points until the middle of the third quarter. A&M settling for field goals when they should have been scoring touchdowns kept the Gamecocks hanging around.
The Aggies built a 16-0 lead but could have been 27-0. It almost ended in disaster. South Carolina stormed back to tie the game at 16 late in the third quarter, but the Aggies were level-headed and didn’t falter.
They responded in the fourth quarter with a 11-play, 55-yard drive that lasted 6:02 and ended with a field goal, the defense forced a punt after just five plays, and the offense sealed the deal with a 11-play, 78-yard touchdown that took 5:45 off the clock and put the Aggies up by 10.
The Aggies enter the bye week on a three-game winning streak and the confidence that they will do whatever it takes to win games.
