Texas A&M football is likely set at quarterback for the next couple of years, but that won’t stop him from bringing in elite talent at the position.

Editor’s note: article references Nick Starkel being with the Aggies, he announced he will transfer shortly after this article was published.

Jimbo Fisher likely won’t have to make a tough decision at quarterback for Texas A&M football until at least the 2020 season. He was tasked with picking between Kellen Mond and Nick Starkel in year one, and despite having a couple of windows to give the reins back to Starkel, he went with Mond and didn’t look back.

This added to the speculation Starkel might transfer. Early reports suggest Starkel will be at spring practice this year. This could simply mean he intends to graduate from A&M and move on as a graduate transfer, in which case he wouldn’t have to sit out a here.

Mond has at least one more season as the starting quarterback for the Aggies. Depending on how that goes, he could decide to forego his senior season and head to the NFL. I’d wager that not being the case unless Mond makes a tremendous leap in year three.

So Fisher will have Mond for at two more years, perhaps, and then there is 2018 4-star QB James Foster and 2019 3-star QB Zach Calzada. Foster was a major get for Fisher on signing day last year and he could be the real deal. Calzada could prove to be much better than his star rating. He drew interest from Georgia in the final hour when the Bulldogs lost 2018 No. 2 overall recruit Justin Fields to transfer.

Presumably Foster or Calzada will be ready to take over when Mond’s time comes to an end. Foster already redshirted in 2018, and presumably Calzada can redshirt with Foster serving as Mond’s primary backup. Even without a redshirt, Calzada will be a true sophomore or junior when he can compete for the starting job. The Aggies are should feel good about their quarterback situation for the next three to four seasons.

But that won’t stop Fisher from bringing in the best possible talent at the position every year, which is the case with top 2020 QB DJ Uiagalelei from California who just picked up an offer from the Ags.

Uiagalelei is the No. 1 pro style quarterback, No. 7 overall prospect and is the No. 124 recruit of all time according to the 247 Sports composite. Most projections have him choosing between Clemson, Oregon and USC. You could hardly pick a better quarterback to learn behind for a year (maybe two) than Trevor Lawrence, so Clemson makes a whole lot of sense even for a California kid.

Fisher is shooting his shot, as the kids say, but it’s worth it for a quarterback as talented as Uiagalelei.

Jimbo currently has the Aggies as the No. 7 class in the 2020 rankings. He doesn’t have a quarterback yet and is shooting for the stars early.
