Backup quarterbacks make Fisher’s job tougher

Kellen Mond doesn’t have to compete for the starting job for the first time in his three offseasons on campus. Nick Starkel transferred to Arkansas after Mond locked up the job in Fisher’s eyes. However, as much as Mond appears to have the ability to lead the Aggies to great heights, Starkel transferring leaves the cupboard bare of experience behind him.

Connor Blumrick, James Foster and Zach Calzada are competing for the rights to back up Mond. Blumrick has been running with the second team for most of the practices with media availability, but his hold on the job may no longer be very secure.

James Foster and Zach Calzada each looked good in their own right during the Spring Game. Foster led the Maroon team offense with poise and made some excellent throws in the process. Calzada was not as accurate as Foster, but his arm strength was on display, especially on a beautifully-thrown touchdown to Cupp.

Fisher named Blumrick the second team starter for all of spring, only to have the two guys behind him outperform Blumrick in the Maroon And White Game. Good luck, coach.
