Texas A&M baseball fell short in the SEC tournament and did not do enough to host a regional when the NCAA tournament begins this week.

The Aggies were still holding out hope they had done enough in the regular season to be one of the 16 teams which hosted a regional when the NCAA Tournament begins on Friday, May 31, but the teams were announced today and Texas A&M baseball would not be one of those 16.

Heading into the SEC tournament last week it was pretty clear the Aggies needed to win a couple of games at least. They had stumbled against Ole Miss and Mississippi State in the weeks leading up to the tournament, although they took two of three against SEC West regular season co-leader Arkansas.

This momentum from the series win against the Razorbacks gave Aggie fans some hope they would get the necessary games in order to host the regional. However, after winning in walk off fashion against Florida in Game 1, Texas A&M couldn’t find their offense as they lost 2-0 to Georgia and then 1-0 to Ole Miss to be eliminated from the tournament and all but eliminated from hosting a regional.

Their pitching has been stellar all year long, but the offense has come and gone leading to the roller coaster ride of a season. John Doxakis even received All SEC Tournament honors despite losing his only start. He was that brilliant in the loss to Ole Miss.

The Aggies now await their fate with the selection taking place later today. Baseball America predicts the Aggies traveling to North Carolina as the No. 2 seed in the Tar Heels regional. They would be the No. 17 overall seed in this case. Also, they could have the Aggies stay close to home by going to Texas Tech or Oklahoma State’s regional.

Texas A&M is expected to be among 11 SEC teams making the baseball tournament this season, which would be an NCAA record. If the offense wakes up, the Aggies have a serious chance to make some noise. As we’ve seen so far this season, that is a major if.
