Quarterback

QB – James Foster – 4-star in 2018, No. 271 overall, No. 12 at his position

This might have actually been the toughest competition between two players, especially given what we saw in the 2019 Maroon And White Game. James Foster and Zach Calzada are currently engaged in stiff competition for the backup job behind Kellen Mond. At this point, all we can do is speculate about Mond’s future, but it would be an exercise in futility to assume Mond will stick around for his senior season. He has given no indication he will stay or go after 2019.

So, the winner of the backup job could be the starter as early as next season. Can Fisher win a national title with a young quarterback? Well, he did exactly that with Florida State and redshirt freshman Jameis Winston in 2013.

Foster showed ability to lead an offense in the spring game but it didn’t lead to any points, where as Calzada showed off his impressive arm strength on a touchdown pass to Cupp and made some nice throws to demonstrate exactly why Fisher was so high on him, and why Fisher had to fend off a late push from Georgia right before the early signing period.

Having said that, I believe Foster offers more upside than Calzada, especially in the early stages of their college careers. Neither guy has elite speed for the position, but Foster offers a little more as a runner.
