The Texas A&M Basketball team had a wildly disappointing season in 2020. After a strong start to his career as head coach in College Station, Buzz Williams laid an egg in year two. The Aggies couldn’t find consistency in a COVID-riddled season and as a result, they would lose a lot of games.

The Aggies would go 8-10 overall with a 2-10 conference record. They’d finish the year on a bad note, ending with a 3-game losing streak. COVID had negatively impacted the team but they’ll look to bounce back in 2021.

It wasn’t just the Aggies that were affected by the pandemic, either. You’d be hard-pressed to find a basketball program that didn’t have some sort of negative repercussions in the 2020 year. As a result, the transfer portal is filled with more players than ever before.

Texas A&M Basketball would add to this.

Texas A&M Basketball forward Jonathan Aku has entered his name into the portal

The Aggies fell victim to an overactive transfer portal when forward Jonathan Aku entered his name into the portal. It’s important to note that entering ones’ name into the portal does not guarantee a transfer, but in all likelihood, he’ll be gone in 2021.

Aku had a disappointing couple of seasons in College Station, averaging just 1.3 points and 2.6 rebounds in his time on the court with just 10.6 minutes per game.

Most recently, he would have an unproductive year after being given the opportunity to start in 10 games in 2020. His stats would hardly see a change though, increasing to just 1.8 points and 3.2 rebounds per game in 14.4 minutes per game and 10 starts. He can be an extremely talented player, so Aggies fans will hope to see him find success elsewhere.

Aku leaving the program will open up a scholarship for the Aggies to use. In all likelihood, Buzz Williams will reach out to some of the talented players in the portal to see if he can find a better fit for an Aggies team desperately looking for some energy.

A mutual part could help both parties in this situation. Aku will get a fresh start and Buzz Williams will be able to find a better fit for his system. Hopefully, this is the first step toward rebuilding this Teas A&M Basketball team.
