Texas A&M Football: Breaking down Kellen Mond’s NFL QB comparisons
Texas A&M Football star Kellen Mond gets a relevant comparison in Dak Prescott
Of each of the comparisons thus far, this is the first one that is to an active present-day NFL player. It’s shocking how many strange 2000s-era comparisons are drawn leading up to the draft. Who sees Kellen Mond play and thinks of Christian Ponder? But I digress.
One of the few modern-day comparisons that Kellen Mond draws consistently is to Dak Prescott, the Dallas Cowboys’ current quarterback. This is an imperfect comparison, but a surprisingly good one.
Once again, this is another equivalent drawn between two SEC quarterbacks. That said, it goes much deeper than that.
Both of these guys are generally pocket passers. Say what you want about their ability on the ground — they won’t use their legs unless they absolutely have to. That said, neither of them are electrifying passers.
Kellen Mond probably won’t make his money in the NFL by being Patrick Mahomes. Actually, I can guarantee you that Mond won’t ever be an MVP-caliber player in the league — he’s simply not built to be that guy. But he could be one heck of a Dak Prescott.
Mond’s time with the Aggies should be looked at as a huge positive for some franchises.
Take the Chicago Bears, for example, a team that has had subpar quarterback play, but has found success when they have a serviceable guy under center. It may be too late in the stage of their team’s growth, but a fully-developed Mond could have been the perfect guy in Chicago.
Imagine if Prescott was their quarterback in 2020.
While this may be an imperfect comparison when it comes to their game mechanics, it’s spot-on in terms of how Kellen Mond’s NFL career is likely to pan out. You will not find a better one than this.
