The Texas A&M Football team had more security at the quarterback position over the last four years than any other team in the country. Kellen Mond may not have been the most explosive quarterback, but he was a sure-shot to get the ball into the endzone when it needed to happen for the Aggies.
Unfortunately, all good things come to an end. Kellen Mond’s Texas A&M Football career is no exception to that.
That said, Aggie fans should have a chance to watch him play at the next level, especially in a year where a record number of NFL teams are looking for a new quarterback as the 2021 NFL Draft approaches.
Texas A&M Football QB Kellen Mond has been rising on draft boards
While Kellen Mond has undeniable talent at the quarterback position, he hasn’t generally been thought of as a guy with first-round potential. As previously mentioned, his playstyle has had a distinct ceiling thus far as a passer.
But lately, NFL scouts have been seeing things differently. In fact, Mond has been shooting up almost every draft board that there is. He went from being a mid-round lock to a guy who could sneak into the first round of the draft.
And as things usually go, the bigger names at the quarterback spot in the NFL tend to have lots of comparisons thrown their way.
That said, today we are going to break down a few of these comparisons. We’ll dive into whether or not they’re accurate and whether or not they are a compliment for the former Aggie quarterback.

Former Texas A&M Football star Kellen Mond has drawn comparisons to Colin Kaepernick
Kellen Mond has drawn a handful of comparisons thus far, but one of the more memorable ones had been to former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick. Unfortunately, Kaepernick will likely be remembered for everything in his career that didn’t relate to football, but he was a solid NFL QB1 for a while.
This comparison has been made by a handful of experts, but most notably, NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein drew a line between these players on NFL Network’s “Total Access.” He would go on to talk about both of their abilities to effectively move on zone reads.
A bold comparison, but there may be some legs to it. Get it, like a dual-threat quarterback? Sorry.
To be honest, the comparison of these two players isn’t too far from the truth. While Mond would like to have a longer career in the league, he won’t necessarily complain about having his game compared to Kaepernick.
Specifically, both of these guys are dual-threat quarterbacks who prefer to stay in the pocket. They’ve got size and can bomb the ball deep, but each of them struggles to find consistency on a night-to-night basis. Plus, each of these players was a four-year starter.
In terms of the eye test, this one works. Mond looks like a spitting image of Kaepernick when he was in college.

Texas A&M Football QB Kellen Mond is receiving a [expletive] load of comparisons to Josh Dobbs
If you want to save some time when looking for Kellen Mond NFL comparisons, this article is a great landing spot for you. That said, if you do decide to venture elsewhere, get ready to be flooded with Josh Dobbs comparisons.
And actually, these two quarterbacks do have a lot in common. They both wore the number 11 and played in the SEC. That, however, is the extent of the comparison in my eyes.
This is one of those comparisons that seems like the lazy go-to for some reason. If you’ve watched any significant amount of football from both of these guys, you know that there is almost no backbone to this comparison.
Dobbs was a much more mobile quarterback. That’s not to say that Mond wasn’t, but the Texas A&M guy has always been a better passer than runner. Watch his highlight tape and you’ll find all passes. Watch Dobbs’ highlight tape and 75% of his plays will be on the ground.
Dobbs ran the ball whenever he got a chance, while Mond only ran the ball when that was the only option remaining to keep the play alive. That said, there are more dissimilar quarterbacks out there, but this comparison is overblown.

Texas A&M Football star Kellen Mond gets a relevant comparison in Dak Prescott
Of each of the comparisons thus far, this is the first one that is to an active present-day NFL player. It’s shocking how many strange 2000s-era comparisons are drawn leading up to the draft. Who sees Kellen Mond play and thinks of Christian Ponder? But I digress.
One of the few modern-day comparisons that Kellen Mond draws consistently is to Dak Prescott, the Dallas Cowboys’ current quarterback. This is an imperfect comparison, but a surprisingly good one.
Once again, this is another equivalent drawn between two SEC quarterbacks. That said, it goes much deeper than that.
Both of these guys are generally pocket passers. Say what you want about their ability on the ground — they won’t use their legs unless they absolutely have to. That said, neither of them are electrifying passers.
Kellen Mond probably won’t make his money in the NFL by being Patrick Mahomes. Actually, I can guarantee you that Mond won’t ever be an MVP-caliber player in the league — he’s simply not built to be that guy. But he could be one heck of a Dak Prescott.
Mond’s time with the Aggies should be looked at as a huge positive for some franchises.
Take the Chicago Bears, for example, a team that has had subpar quarterback play, but has found success when they have a serviceable guy under center. It may be too late in the stage of their team’s growth, but a fully-developed Mond could have been the perfect guy in Chicago.
Imagine if Prescott was their quarterback in 2020.
While this may be an imperfect comparison when it comes to their game mechanics, it’s spot-on in terms of how Kellen Mond’s NFL career is likely to pan out. You will not find a better one than this.
