Texas A&M Football: Kellen Mond is drafted by the Minnesota Vikings
Former Texas A&M Football quarterback Kellen Mond wasn’t considered one of the top quarterback prospects in the 2021 NFL Draft. That said, he was one of the bigger sleepers as a guy who doesn’t really have any distinctive weaknesses.
Going into the Draft, it was unclear where he would land. Unlike the top guys like Trevor Lawrence, Zach Wilson, and Trey Lance, Mond wasn’t a lock for any particular part of the draft. That said, he was considered a unanimous top ten prospect at the quarterback position in 2021.
Kellen Mond would be drafted with the 66th pick in the 2021 NFL Draft by the Minnesota Vikings. The primary quarterback on the roster is Kirk Cousins, who likely won’t be around long. Mond could be his predecessor.
Seeing him taken at the 66 spot is no surprise, as he had talent that could have seen him sneak into the first round.
Will former Texas A&M Football quarterback Kellen Mond have an instant impact?
Kellen Mond is a guy who, among other things, could have an instant impact in the league. While he may not have as high of a ceiling as some of the top guys, he’s the second-most consistent player in this draft to Trevor Lawrence.
Specifically, Mond brought consistency to a football program that didn’t have a ton at the quarterback spot for a while. He changed the culture in College Station. Here’s what his numbers looked like in 2020.
- 71 passing touchdowns
- 27 interceptions
- 9,661 passing yards
- 1,609 rushing yards
The most noticeable part of those numbers is the sheer volume of total yards. Mond was the starter in College Station for over three years, a sign that he can be a long-term piece for the Vikings.
In the NFL, he could be a guy who has a similar career to Dak Prescott. His even-keeled playstyle will be appreciated at the next level, where he’ll look to turn his current selection into a long career. With his skill set, he could become one of the best Aggie players in the league.
Hopefully, he can find some early playing time and show off his QB ability. If not, don’t forget about the former Texas A&M quarterback, as he’ll be waiting for an opportunity to step into the spotlight.
