Everybody that is a fan of the Texas A&M Football team knows how good of a coach Jimbo Fisher is. After a series of coaches who couldn’t bring the Aggies to the next level, Fisher already brought them a step forward from where the program was at.
That said, the previous head coach in Kevin Sumlin did it even sooner. Only that time around, he wouldn’t reach the same level of success again while head coaching the Aggies’ football team.
Fisher will look to build more consistency in College Station, and if his time at Florida State taught us anything, it’s that he is completely capable of doing so.
Even in his short time with Texas A&M, Fisher has already shown some of this consistency. In 2018 and 2019, he kept the Aggies close to contention, and in 2020, he took the next step with a New Years Six bowl win.
Texas A&M Football HC Jimbo Fisher was listed as a top ten HC by The Athletic
Jimbo Fisher’s good work has been paying off, as he was upped a ranking in The Athletic’s annual head coach rankings. Last season, Fisher was ranked by Stewart Mandel as the 14th-best head coach in the game.
Clearly, the college football world has taken notice of what’s going on in College Station, as he was moved up to number seven by Mandel this year.
Another college football expert also weighed in on his top coaches, with a slightly different result. Rather than listing Fisher as the 7th-best coach in college football as Mandel had, Bruce Feldman ranked Fisher as the 6th-best. Unlike Mandel, Feldman actually didn’t change his ranking of Fisher.
If Fisher finds himself as a top ten coach now, he could easily move into the top five if he has a good season in 2021. He’ll look to make a push for the College Football Playoff, which could send him to the next echelon of head coaches.
Here is a full list of the coaches ahead of Fisher, comprised of both Feldman and Mandel’s choices:
- Ryan Day
- James Franklin
- Kirby Smart
- Lincoln Riley
- Brian Kelly
- Dabo Swinney
- Nick Saban
The fact that Bruce Feldman has James Franklin ahead of Jimbo Fisher seems questionable, to say the least, especially after a 4-5 season from Penn State in 2021. Other than this, Fisher will have to earn his climb up the rankings.
The Aggies are set to have a strong season with a top defensive unit returning. Look for Fisher to shoot up next year’s rankings.
