The Texas A&M Football team currently has one of its best quarterback competitions in recent memory in full force. Zach Calzada and Haynes King are going head-to-head to win the starting spot in 2021. Whoever gets it will have a lot of weight on their shoulders right out of the gate.

But in order to earn that spot, they each have to play their best football, leaving no doubt behind that Jimbo Fisher made the right choice. But what if neither of them does?

The question that I’m asking today is not whether or not they’ll play at a high enough level to be Texas A&M’s starting quarterback. Rather, this is a question of whether or not one of these guys can create enough separation to earn the job outright.

The Texas A&M Football team could see a quarterback competition that extends into the 2021-22 season

On the surface, this quarterback competition seems relatively simple. Haynes King.

But if Haynes King was the outright starter, Fisher wouldn’t be toying around with Zach Calzada for this long. Instead, he would be preparing his new starting quarterback to be the face of football in the state of Texas. Make no mistake — expectations will be extremely high for whoever wins the competition.

So if Fisher hasn’t committed to King at quarterback, Calzada must still have a chance. It’ll be up to one of these guys to separate themselves over the next few months and earn the starting spot. That said, if they’re this close now, how much separation could we even see?

To some degree, there should be a worry that there won’t be a confident starter come game one of the 2021-22 season. Sure, both guys are talented, but the decision could be more difficult than anticipated for Fisher, who is hosting his first quarterback competition in College Station.

Talent-wise, there shouldn’t be any concern. Having said that, the longer this competition rages on, the less time the eventual starter will have to emotionally prepare himself to be the starting quarterback at the best football school (currently) in Texas.

As a fan, you have to trust Fisher to get the job done. That said, there will be a lot of question marks as the 2021 season approaches.
