Kellen Mond came to play for the Texas A&M Football team four years ago. He became the team’s starter as a freshman and never looked back, even during a transitional period where Jimbo Fisher became the team’s head coach.
Mond was never the most explosive quarterback in the world. Just a few years removed from Johnny Manziel, one of the greatest college football quarterbacks of all time, this was tough to accept for some Aggie fans.
That said, Mond did his job as a quarterback, always putting his team into a position to win, even if it took a strong performance from the team’s defense.
Mond would accumulate 9,661 yards throughout his career, an extremely impressive number. He would add to that with 71 touchdowns to just 27 interceptions during his time under center in Aggieland.
Clearly, he was doing something right, as he was projected to be a relatively highly-drafted player in the 2021 NFL Draft. And he was. Mond would be picked by the Minnesota Vikings early in the third round with the 66th overall pick, officially making him an NFL player.
Texas A&M Football HC Jimbo Fisher called Kellen Mond’s situation in Minnesota a “perfect set-up”
There were more questions than answers when Mond was drafted by the Minnesota Vikings. When will he start? Does this mean the Vikings are moving on from Kirk Cousins? Are the Vikings a good fit?
This week, we got the answer to one of those questions, as Jimbo Fisher was quoted calling the Minnesota Vikings a “perfect set-up” for Mond in the NFL. Here’s a larger portion of the quote according to Chris Tomasson.
"“Being behind Kirk, who’s a great veteran, who’s been productive, I think it’s a perfect set-up for (Mond)”"
Fisher was extremely complimentary of Mond’s situation with the Vikings, mentioning how strong Minnesota’s entire organization is and noting head coach Mike Zimmer as one of the best in the game.
Fisher continued to boast about Mond’s situation in Minnesota.
"“I think he’s in a great situation with a great organization, and I think he’s going to have a great career, I really do. He’s an unbelievable character, quality young man, and he’s a heck of a football player.”"
Aggie fans can be confident that Mond will be eager to learn behind Kirk Cousins, one of the most established quarterbacks in the NFL. Not unlike Mond, Cousins has always been a guy who shows consistency above explosiveness. This could be part of the reason why the Vikings drafted Mond.
Mond could take the starting job as soon as this season, so keep your eyes peeled for the former TAMU quarterback to get some snaps at the highest level.
