The Texas A&M Football team has had more stability at the quarterback position than virtually any other school in the past four seasons. From 2018 through the end of the 2020-21 season, the Aggies have had Kellen Mond under center.

With Mond off to the NFL, the Texas A&M Football team will have to look at new options, still midway through a quarterback battle between Haynes King and Zach Calzada.

That said, the last time there was a quarterback battle in College Station, Mond was part of it. That quarterback battle went down between Mond, a 4-star freshman, and Nick Starkel, a second-year former 3-star quarterback.

At first, that second-year quarterback in Starkel won the competition.

Starkel would only take the starting job for a year, and not even the full year at that. He and Mond flip-flopped throughout the 2017-18 season, as the quarterback competition would extend into the next offseason, where Mond would take over full-time with the arrival of Jimbo Fisher.

As a quarterback at Texas A&M, Starkel actually put together a solid resume. In mostly a single season, Starkel accumulated 1,962 yards, 15 touchdowns, and 6 interceptions. He wasn’t the greatest Aggie quarterback of all time, but he got the job done for a bit.

He did, however, catch a lot of flack for a rough 2017 season that would eventually see head coach Kevin Sumlin be fired.

Starkel has since transferred to Arkansas and then to San Jose State.

Fast forward to 2021 and Starkel is still being disrespected. In a list created by a popular Instagram page in @studentsection_, Starkel was listed as two separate SEC teams’ worst quarterback of the 2010s. Here’s how Starkel responded on Twitter.

While this could be true for Arkansas, where Starkel struggled as the team’s starter, he was a solid starter for the Texas A&M Football team. He gave Kellen Mond, one of the school’s best all-time quarterbacks, a run for his money.

That said, this is the same decade that saw the TAMU Football team field a handful of NFL quarterbacks and one of the greatest passers in the history of college football in Johnny Manziel.

The argument could be made that he was, in fact, the Aggies’ worst quarterback of the decade. The caveat is that Texas A&M has had elite passers since 2010.
