Texas A&M Football: What Jimbo Fisher can learn from past SEC challengers
The 2017 Auburn Football team shows an example of a less talented team that toppled Alabama
The 2017 Auburn Football team will not give the Aggies much insight into how they can win a national championship or even make the College Football Playoff for that matter. Instead, Auburn will teach the Aggies how to topple Alabama within the very same conference.
Auburn lost four football games in 2017. The silver lining? Only a single one of these games came against an SEC opponent during the regular season. Their single loss was good enough to gain entrance to the SEC Championship game.
They did this by taking down the Alabama Crimson Tide in the final game of the season. Each team had a single loss but Auburn held the tie-breaker. The Tigers would eventually lose their final two games, including the SEC Championship Game, but taught everybody some valuable lessons along the way.
Primarily, Jimbo Fisher can take note of the fact that Auburn put the past couple of seasons in the rear-view mirror. Prior to their 2017 win, they had taken three consecutive double-digit losses to Alabama. Hope seemed lost in one of college football’s favorite rivalries.
When it came time to step up to the occasion, Gus Malzahn’s teams did just that.
Hopefully, Jimbo Fisher can learn a thing or two from Auburn and beat Alabama in a race to the top of the SEC West.
