The Texas A&M Football team hosted one of the country’s best football prospects in the month of June. That prospect is Tony Mitchell, a 5-star cornerback out of Alabaster, Alabama.

As things stand, Mitchell is a top ten prospect in the 2023 class and the highest-ranked cornerback among all players. He holds offers from Florida State, Alabama, Tennessee, and virtually any school that wants to have an elite defense.

The 6-2, 180-pound corner was once committed to Tennessee but recommitted shortly after. The Volunteers are still considered a team near the top of his list. Mitchell has been a top prospect in his class for years, earning an offer from the Aggies as early as eighth grade. That’s not a typo.

If the Texas A&M Football team wants to improve their secondary, they have to prioritize this 5-star corner

Last season, Texas A&M ranked 56th in the country in receiving yards allowed per game. Yes, it’s tough to defend against certain passing attacks in the SEC, but this is a number that needs to see improvement if the Aggies want to win a national championship.

Even though A&M has been elite in each recruiting cycle since Jimbo Fisher’s arrival, they haven’t necessarily brought in top-end cornerback talent. In the 2021 cycle, the Aggies’ top cornerback commit was Duece Harmon, a player sitting just outside of the top-200 players in the class.

They did bring in Jaylon Jones, a 5-star safety/cornerback who could be due for a breakout season. Outside of him, however, Fisher has been inconsistent when it comes to bringing top talent to Aggieland at the CB spot.

That could quickly change, however, as the Aggies have their sights set on the top cornerback prospect in the 2023 class. Tony Mitchell is a cornerback with size, which seems like a common theme for the Aggies recently.

Mitchell recently put the Aggies in his top ten schools, tweeting about it early on Thursday.

On the field, he’s always in a great position and finds a way to intercept passes. The soon-to-be junior cornerback finished his most recent season with four interceptions, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, and two defensive touchdowns. He also accumulated 82 tackles, something that is a key part of his game.

Mitchell closes out quickly, not giving the ball carrier time to maneuver around him. He could be a key player in the passing game and in certain parts of the Aggies’ running game.
