Implication No. 2: Texas A&M’s 2023 quarterback competition may already be in progress

This slide will be somewhat of an extension from the last slide. As mentioned, the Texas A&M Football team has no guarantee that Zach Calzada or Haynes King will be their guy. This is college football, and we’ve seen a handful of guys get chewed up and spit back out.

In order for either of these guys to separate themselves as the team’s long-term starter, they have to leave no doubt in the mind of Jimbo Fisher that they are this team’s quarterback. If A&M isn’t getting it done on the offensive end, Fisher has an objectively more talented guy waiting to pounce on the starting role.

As a result, this announcement shifts the entire mood surrounding the quarterback competition in College Station.

Rather than a competition to be the starter this season, the now-three quarterbacks will be competing to see who can become the long-term starter. Jimbo Fisher likes to find a single guy and stick with him, as evident by his commitments to players like Jameis Winston and Kellen Mond. If he’s going to make a change, it’ll happen early.

It’s also worth keeping in mind that Eli Stowers is waiting in the shadows and could become a factor in this ongoing QB competition.
