Takeaway No. 2: This might not be the year for a two-loss team to make the College Football Playoff

The sentence above almost seems redundant when you consider that there hasn’t been a two-loss College Football Playoff team yet.

But Texas A&M seemed different than years past. The Aggies had a perfectly viable excuse for playing bad football — their quarterback was injured and the backup was playing behind an offensive line that was also riddled with injuries. These circumstances thrust virtually the entire offense into a position that it was not ready for.

It may have taken a while, but that terrible offense is a thing of the past. Zach Calzada, who looked like he couldn’t throw a half-decent pass if his life depended on it, has turned into an above-average SEC quarterback. The offensive line has finally found stability, avoiding injuries in recent weeks.

In that sense, the Aggies are an entirely different team than they were when their two losses occurred.

Unfortunately, it might not matter.

There are ten teams ahead of Texas A&M in the CFP Rankings who have either one or two losses. At least one of these teams will drop to at least two losses with a few important Big Ten matchups ahead, but the rest of the teams will determine their own destiny. It’s unlikely that Texas A&M will jump any of these squads without them losing, which means that seven top ten teams would have to take a loss.

But there is an alternative.
