Implication No. 2: Jalen Wydermyer could be the top tight end in the 2022 NFL Draft

2021 wasn’t a college football season that had many runaway players at any position. Bryce Young won the Heisman Trophy, but the award was up for grabs by a handful of players, which can be looked at as a testament to the lack of true superstars this season.

The tight end position was no different.

That said, Wydermyer does seem like a favorite to be the first tight end taken in the 2022 draft by a handful of experts. Look at Bleacher Report’s scouting department, which listed the Aggie tight end as their top 2022 prospect at his position. Here’s how they explained his spot.

"Though Wydermyer is not the most explosive athlete overall, he has a feel for space and has natural hands that allow him to confidently extend for throws away from his body. He has already shown the ability to be a true Y-tight end, block tight ends in the run game and not be “hidden” because he’s more than a glorified wide receiver."

His versatility and natural ability to be an offensive ball hawk in the air are mentioned, while his blocking abilities may push him over the edge as the top guy. It’s worth noting that Wydermyer was not B/R’s best receiving tight end, most versatile tight end, best blocking tight end, or most pro-ready tight end — he’s simply the best overall prospect.
