Why 2022 will be a rebuilding year for the Texas A&M football team

The Texas A&M football team fell to an 8-4 regular-season record due to some unfortunate circumstances in the 2021 season. After a couple of suspended players to begin the year, the Aggies caught the injury bug in a hurry.

This saw quarterback Haynes King go down with an injury — the first of a long stretch of injuries. The offensive line would be banged up all year long and the wide receiver position saw Caleb Chapman drop with an injury. A couple of offensive line injuries followed and the Aggies’ offense was in bad shape.

This was especially depressing, as this was supposed to be the year that Texas A&M took a shot at the College Football Playoff. Unfortunately, A&M’s preseason 6th ranking in the AP Poll quickly turned into a disappointing season, ultimately ending with the Aggies opting out of the Gator Bowl due to Covid.

Things aren’t looking any better for Texas A&M, with a few immediate departures. Players who will not return include Kenyon Green, Jalen Wydermer, and Isaiah Spiller. These three were easily the best three players on an A&M offense that lacked star power in the right place.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but things might not look good for a couple of years in Aggieland.

If I had to throw out a prediction, I’d have Texas A&M put together a similar season next year record-wise, as they’ll be replacing starters at the quarterback, tight end, offensive tackle, and runningback positions.

The silver lining here is that Jimbo Fisher will be bringing in one of the best recruiting classes in Aggie history. Scratch that — Jimbo Fisher could be bringing in one of the best recruiting classes in college football history in 2022 and has shown no stoppage in momentum in 2023. As things stand, the Aggies have the top 2022 class over schools like Alabama and Georgia and have a handful of recruits who might still commit.

The Aggies will still be working with top ten classes that he has gathered over the past few seasons. As early as 2022, nearly every player in College Station will be a Fisher-recruited guy. As of 2021, the Aggies rank 8th in 247Sports’ talent index — after this 2022 class, A&M should shoot up to the top five.

Recruiting should also become infinitely easier for A&M, as Jimbo Fisher’s presence in College Station is virtually guaranteed. The current Aggie head coach turned down $125 million to stay at his post — he’s here to stay.

There are exciting years ahead for the Aggies, but A&M fans should be prepared to endure another close-to-competing year.
