Texas A&M Football Stat No. 3: Team Sacks

Through all of the uncertainty that faced the depth chart of this Texas A&M football team, one group seemed secure regardless — the defensive line.

The unit’s pride and joy was DeMarvin Leal, who declared for the NFL Draft and will almost definitely be a first-round pick. That said, it seems the Aggies were so stacked on the defensive line that even without Leal, they’d be among the best in the country.

A handful of stats back this up but perhaps the most convincing was Texas A&M’s sack total in 2021. A&M finished with 39 sacks on the year, which averages out to 3.25 per contest. The love was spread throughout the D-line too, as DeMarvin Leal and Tyree Johnson tied atop the stat sheet with 8.5 sacks apiece. Micheal Clemons was not far behind with seven of his own.

That said, A&M’s depth was on display, as 13 other players all tallied at least a half-sack on the year, indicating that the team will be just fine without a few key contributors returning next year.

Much like the special teams stats from the last slide, these sack numbers could translate to the team in 2022. It’s also important to note that defensive coordinator Mike Elko is gone and has been replaced by DJ Durkin, who should fit nicely in the Aggies’ scheme.
