After a decade and a half of Rob Childress at the helm, the Texas A&M baseball team’s seemingly drastic change at the head coaching spot was cause for concern. The program has been solid for years but nobody knew what to expect under Jim Schlossnagle.

Schlossnagle was a home-run hire for A&M, as he was already established as one of the best head coaches in college baseball. The now-Aggie head coach had an all-time record of 811-393 with the TCU Horned Frogs, making him their winningest head coach in program history.

Here’s what TAMU Athletic Director Ross Bjork said about the hire.

"“As our search progressed, it became abundantly clear that Jim Schlossnagle had the experience, recruiting prowess, player development background, and baseball knowledge to deliver a championship-caliber program for Aggie baseball. He owns the best winning percentage of any college baseball program in Texas over the last 10 years and his track record of success on a national stage speaks for itself.”"

So far, he’s off to a hot start with the Aggies.

The Texas A&M baseball team is off to a great start. How long can they keep their undefeated record afloat?

The Texas A&M baseball team didn’t have super high expectations heading into the 2022 season. As mentioned, a new head coach was taking over a team that went 29-27 overall with a disappointing 9-21 SEC record last season.

But so far, there has been no adjustment period.

The Aggies have run through their first two opponents, kicking off their season with a dominating 13-1 win over Fordham. They’d continue to beat the same opponent twice more in less convincing fashion before another dominant victory over Lamar, 9-3.

Trevor Werner and Brett Minich have played the best ball this year, each recording a home run and six RBIs on the year. Neither will likely maintain their current batting averages but both are off to hot starts and big contributing reasons as to why this team is performing so well.

But how long can they maintain this winning streak?

The Aggies will have a relatively easy series against a Penn team that struggled last season, stumbling to a 6-8 record. Anything other than a three-game sweep would seem like a disappointment, while their first real challenge won’t come until the Frisco College Baseball Classic rolls around and the Aggies face Washington State, Iowa, and Wichita State.

How they respond to this challenge will go a long way in determining how Jim Schlossnagle’s first season goes in charge of this football team.
