Texas A&M Football: 3 Jimbo Fisher stats you won’t believe
The Texas A&M football team is undeniably lucky to call Jimbo Fisher its head coach. The Aggie frontman is established as one of the best head coaches in the country and he’s part of a small list of leaders who have a national championship under their belt.
That is, of course, in reference to his national championship victory with the Florida State Seminoles less than a decade ago, where he won it all with a Jameis Winston-led team.
But after failing to reach the spotlight for a few years, some forge just how great of a head coach he is. Today, I’m going to give you three Jimbo Fisher stats that seem too good to be true.
Stat No. 1: Jimbo Fisher is 8-2 in bowl games in his career
Upon doing some research for this article, a stat immediately popped up that was extremely impressive. As you just read, it’s his 8-2 bowl game winning percentage.
Fisher has only coached 12 seasons — in one of them, he left his position at Florida State for the Texas A&M football head coaching job before being selected to a bowl game. Most recently, the Aggies had to withdraw from their bowl select, as the team was struggling with COVID-19 issues.
That leaves ten bowl games, where Jimbo Fisher has an extremely impressive 8-2 record. His only two losses have come against top-15 opponents in the Rose Bowl and Peach Bowl. His wins have come against some elite teams, including a trio of Orange Bowl victories and a National Championship win.
Stat No. 2: Jimbo Fisher only has one season as a head coach with fewer than eight wins
Of any stat that I tell you, this is the one that impresses me the most. In 12 seasons, Fisher has only had a single season with fewer than eight victories on the year — a statistic that may go unnoticed by some.
The current Aggie head coach is a winner. In his eight seasons at Florida State, he entered the double-digit win category on six occasions. At Texas A&M, he likely would have recorded at least 11 wins on the year in 2020 if not for a shortened season.
Say what you want about Fisher — his teams are always competitive.
Stat No. 3: Jimbo Fisher has a top-30 all-time winning percentage among college football head coaches
Okay, when I say top-30 win percentage all time, I mean 30th. Still, Jimbo Fisher’s ability to consistently win football games should not go overlooked. The history of college football is long and full of dominant programs nearly a century ago that had no real competition. Only a few recent head coaches are in the top-30.
To be specific, the only other active head coaches on this list are Dabo Swinney and Nick Saban. Other notable names in the top-30 include “Bear” Bryant, Knut Rockne, Urban Meyer, and Bob Stoops.
